Many companies are now offering this service for a fee to mortgage holders. Considering that borrowers can just call their mortgage providers and get the same service for free, most of these companies are a scam.
The way a lot of them work is that they use a autodialer to play a recorded message to homeowners, offering help with their mortgage. If someone presses one to the autodialer message, the call gets transfered to you. You then try and sell the service.
Since most people who are behind on their mortgages don’t have a lot of money, it is tough for them to pay fees for this service. I have heard of several companies that charge a low upfront fee and then the bulk of the fees at the end of the process. The scam there is that the upfront fee is not refundable, and the company doesn’t really care about the fees at the end because they are happy with the non-refundable upfront fee and really don’t care if they help or not…
I have sold phone services to several of these companies and I could go on and on.
